How to Dispute a Charge on a Discover Card
Many credit card companies, including Discover, allow credit card users to dispute a charge if it’s incorrect or if the card holder doesn’t recognize the item. Working directly with the vendor that issued the charge can be difficult—especially if you’re never even heard of the company. If you see an incorrect charge on your Discover statement, file a dispute directly with the company.
1)Wait for the charge to post to your account first. The Discover billing department has to see a posted transaction to investigate the issue properly.
2)Call the vendor directly to find out more information about the charge before you file the dispute if a phone number is available. If the vendor determines it is incorrect, it will file a credit to your account.
3)Gather any receipts or documentation that prove the transaction is incorrect. For instance, if your receipt from a gas station says you paid $20 but the merchant charged $30, you’ll have to fax or mail Discover a copy of the receipt to accompany your dispute.
4)Log in to your Discover account online and click the “Account Activity” tab to navigate to the charge. Select the “Activity Period” drop-down list if the charge is on a previous statement. Remember that you have 180 days from the date of the charge to file a dispute.
5)Click the arrow next to the transaction to pull up expanded information about the charge. Click “Dispute Charge.” Fill out all pertinent details requested for the dispute, including the reason why it’s wrong and any communication you have had with the merchant. Take down contact details for sending the documentation you collected discover card Step 3 and submit the claim.
6)Log back in to your Discover account periodically to check the status of your dispute in the “My Disputes” area. Discover may issue you a temporary credit while investigating the issue and contacting the merchant. If Discover determines the charge isn’t correct, you’ll receive a permanent credit for the full amount or difference between the charged and correct amount.
