In 1991, Discover Card, as part of a community affairs initiative, launched the Discover Financial Scholarship. The credit card company has awarded more than $16 million to deserving recipients. The good thing about the Discover Financial Scholarship is that you don’t have to be the smartest kid in the class to qualify for the scholarship. You just need a lot of drive and ambition.
Scholarship Amount
The company makes available $250,000 in scholarship money every year. The amount is dispersed across the nation to up to 310 individuals. Up to 10 recipients are awarded $25,000 on the national level. Up to 300 recipients are awarded $2,500 on the state level.
Scholarship Usage
The Discover Card Financial scholarship is designed to cover a portion of the recipient’s educational costs beyond high school. The individual does not have to attend a traditional institution of higher learning. The award recipient can attend any type of formal training, whether it is vocational school, trade school, technical school, two-year college, four-year college or training for licensing/certification.
Who Can Apply
Discover Card Financial Scholarship applicants must be a junior in high school. Cumulative grade point average must be a 2.75 or higher in the sophomore and junior years, based on a 4.0 grading scale. The individual must be active in his community, with proven leadership abilities. There must also be a major roadblock or challenge that he has faced in life.
When and How To Apply
Scholarship application deadlines tend to fluctuate. As a guideline, scholarship candidates can submit an application at the end of the current year, to be considered for the next year.
