Can I really get 5% cashback from my Discover Card
I’m probably quite like you in that I saw a lot of ads around for the Discover Card 5% cashback offer. And probably like you I was quite skeptical so I thought I would take them up on their offer and write about my experiences over the first few months. After all the worst that would happen is that I could return the card if they didn’t stand up to their word.
So, earlier this year I completed an online application which was pretty straightforward and then within a couple of days I received some information through the post that required my signature and a couple of other pieces of information. 5 days later the card was delivered to my house and a simple 1 minute phone call was required to get it activated.
Now I am not one to read through a lot of fine print normally, but in order to take full advantage of their 5% cashback offer I wanted to find out what was and was not included. So, here are the main points that stood out for me:
Includes most categories of purchases at 5% (otherwise there is a 1% cashback rate)
Not available for cash advances
No cashback will be paid if card is not paid up on time
Payment of cashback is made annually
The 5% offer is for new cardmembers only
I thought that was pretty fair. I mean there has to be some catch as using this card is like saving 5% off everything that you buy and they don’t want to just give that away to anyone, so you have to be smart and think about how you are going to use your discover card in order to maximise your cashback.
So, I immediately set up an automated payment with my bank to clear the full balance of the card each month. I chose only to use it for purchases of groceries, gas and restaurants which is stuff that I used to pay for either in cash or using my banks card and then I just forgot about it. This worked out really well because I sometimes forget to pay my bills on time and this way it all happens without my intervention. Simple.
I am really pleased to say that I did receive my 5% cashback for my first month on discover card third bill and then on every bill afterwards. I dont blame them for waiting until the money had actually cleared, but it is great to know that it all works as it should.
